Important Announcement: What’s Happening This Fall?

Friday, July 24 - The Upcoming School Year at BMF

We hope you and your loved ones are all healthy and having some fun this summer, despite these crazy times.

We have been delighted to make music with so many BMFers from Brooklyn and beyond in online lessons and classes during our first-ever summer session! And though we miss camp—in all its songwriting, rock climbing and park-hanging glory—connecting and creating virtually with our musical community every day has been fun, enriching and fortifying.

As August approaches, we have a few important announcements about the upcoming school year:

1. We will continue to conduct all lessons and classes online through January. We know many of you are eager to return to in-person lessons and classes—and we are too. However, we have made this decision after careful consideration and for several reasons:

  • The health of our students, employees and community is our primary concern, so we are minimizing gatherings.
  • To reopen safely in the current environment, we would need to follow social-distancing protocols that require significant changes to how we gather and teach in person. We are very excited by our online curriculum and its potential, and believe we can better serve our students during this time by continuing to develop and improve that curriculum—rather than by creating another curriculum for socially distanced, in-person classes.
  • We believe it's important to wait to re-open until we are confident that we will be able re-open and stay open.

2. After three years, hundreds of gigs, thousands of community room jams, and buckets of joy, creativity and songwriting, we are leaving our studios at 600 Degraw Street in Gowanus. Like so many small businesses, we are unable to continue paying rent for a space that we have not been and will not be using for many months. Our goal is to open in a new space—in the Gowanus!—by early 2021. We are already looking at spaces and are very excited by the possibilities. We will keep you posted on our progress and promise you this: We are committed to gathering together again—in person—in the Brooklyn neighborhood that’s been our home for 10 years.

3. Registration for fall starts next week! Despite some big changes—and continued uncertainty in the world—there is lots of music to be made. Many of you have already submitted your requests for fall. Thank you! We will be reaching out shortly to get you registered. If you have not submitted your requests yet—or you did, but have changes—there’s still time! Just email jessica@brooklynmusicfactory.com with your requests. As we noted above, we have learned so much about teaching, learning and making music online—and can’t wait to share with you this fall.

Finally, we know you will have questions.

Please stay tuned for details on a virtual Town Hall we will be hosting soon so we can answer them face-to-face and in real time. We miss seeing you all in the community room!

We’ve been saying this for months now, but it’s still true…

Connecting with familiar faces, making music and having a creative outlet is more valuable than it’s ever been. We are grateful for all of you and for your commitment to BMF, to our community and to learning and making music!

We look forward to many more years "Inspiring Musicians & Building Community".

Thank you.

Nate, Peira and all of us at BMF

Coronavirus Updates

Friday, May 22 - Summer Camp Update

After much thought, Brooklyn Music Factory has decided to cancel in-person summer camp for the 2020 season. We have been closely monitoring updates from the state and the city, hoping for clearance to open and guidance on how to do so safely, but there are still many unknowns.

Though the state has still not announced an official decision regarding camps, we believe it’s in the best interest of our students to make the call, so families can make alternate plans.

There's good news though: Online band classes and private lessons will be available July-August. Please join us! Click here for more information on our summer session. In the meantime, sign up for a free trial lesson to see what online lessons with BMF are all about.

If you had registered for summer camp and have questions, please contact us at camp@brooklynmusicfactory.com

When will Brooklyn Music Factory re-open? All lessons and classes will be conducted online until further notice. We are carefully monitoring updates from the city and state and plan to re-open our studios as soon as doing so is safe for students and employees. When we do re-open the studios, students will be able to choose between continuing lessons and classes online or resuming in person.
