As a kid, all year long you count down the days until summer. I remember sitting in my hot classroom in Brooklyn, the back of my knees sticking to my chair, and thinking that June felt like forever. I would daydream about summer – thinking of how amazing it would be when it finally came.
It’s hard to live up to a years worth of hype. Can summer actually be as amazing as you hope all winter long? Last summer, as the Brooklyn Music Factory ventured for the first time into the camp world, I wasn’t sure. We designed camp as 6 weeks of fun, game based band rehearsals, mixed in with outdoor play and rock climbing at our neighbors Brooklyn Boulders. Then to top it all off we would end each week with a show in front of friends and family.
The idea sounded great. But would it work? Would we be able to capture the fun spirit of BMFs afterschool program in a different model? Would we be able to move seamlessly from rocking in the studio to climbing on rocks? Lastly, would The BMF camp live up up to summer’s year long hype and cure that summer itch?
I’m proud to say it did and it was truly amazing! Turns out that some time in the studio, some rock climbing, and some time outside, is the perfect combo. Kids have the opportunity to exercise their minds by honing their craft as a musician through drum circles, song dissection, lyric and form games, and learning to work together as a group on the bandstand. They exercise their body scaling the walls at Brooklyn Boulder’s amazing rock climbing facility, and then cooling off at the sprinklers across the street. Then, through all of this, we capture their hearts through our amazing, loving teachers, and the wonderful bond they nurture amongst friends. As a finale, the show was the ultimate celebration of everything that they had experienced all week long.
