How BMF is Different:

Unlike many other Private Lesson programs, BMF focuses on building musicians who are skilled on and off their instruments. Students play BLAM games (Big Lesson About Music) that have them moving around the room, training their ears and their voices. Students learn music theory and songwriting from a young age, so they not only can play music but also understand what they’re playing.

We measure success by how many fun gigs our students play with one another, not by how far our students progress in a method book.

Game-based learning keeps our lessons fun and effective. Our lessons feel nothing like the traditional lesson.

6 KEY MUSIC CONCEPTS EVERY

PRIVATE LESSON STUDENT DEVELOPS

Groove

Hear rhythm. Read rhythm. Play rhythm. Our students learn that a strong sense of groove comes before anything else.

Reading

BMF students build musical fluency. Being able to read & write music notation is a key part of that. Lots of our games challenge the student to be able to write down what they hear.

Melody

Every lesson includes an ear training game. Students work hard to understand the anatomy of a melody, learning to recognize & analyze melodic patterns.

Improvisation

One of the biggest differences between our curriculum and others is that we insists on developing creative thinking in every lesson. Each lesson starts with a ‘5 minute warm up’ that is a freely improvised song writing game.

Harmony

Not only do our students work on building chords, they explore common progressions and put them to the test in their gig song.

Story

Songs are stories first and foremost. Everything played is in support of the story. BMF students learn to let the words trigger the music. Our students mature into musicians that are expressive story tellers, not simply virtuosic instrumentalists.

What BMF Parents Are Saying

“My daughter is playing music more than ever – she loves to sit down at the piano and figure out new songs as well as play what she is working on in class. She really loves it.”

– A BMF Private Lesson Mom

“I thank BMF for taking part in helping to bring music to my family. Together my family is being inspired to be lifelong learners, practicers and players and that is so exciting.”

-A BMF Touring Band Mom

“My son has cycled through a series of attempts to get started in music. He has always been interested, but we could never get him going with it in a sustainable way. However, this fall we found BMF. Now my son plays constantly. He almost always has his guitar in hand. His confidence is growing and now he is even singing! we are shocked by the transformation and so proud of him.
I can only credit this to the amazing teachers and experience he is having at BMF.”

– Annie, A BMF Parent
