Change is in the air!
As you no doubt have noticed, our building is under construction.
What does this mean for BMF? Lots of very cool things, as well as some changes. First, the exciting news… We can look forward to a lot of improvements to the building, including:
• A New Staircase
• 3 (!) Brand-New Bathrooms on Each Floor
• A Deluxe Performance Space on the First Floor
• A Handicap- (and Stroller- !) Accessible Entrance
• A ROOF GARDEN
The estimated completion date is fall 2017.
REALLY IMPORTANT PART
We are moving—temporarily—and we’re very excited about our temporary new home. Here are the details:
- Where are we going?
Our new, temporary home base will be at Battalion Studios—a professional rehearsal studio just 8 blocks away from us at 175 6th St., between 2nd and 3rd Aves. We will also have two satellite studios around the corner from Battalion at King Killer Studios at 69 2nd Ave., at 10th St.
We are VERY excited to partner with these two awesome rehearsal studios. They are well-equipped, spacious and staffed by really cool people who are also part of the Gowanus community we love so much.
- When are we moving?
The first day of classes/lessons in the temporary location will be Monday, Dec. 12.
- How long will we be in the temporary location?
We expect to be in the temporary location until the end of January—but are prepared to stay longer if construction is delayed.
- Wait… There are two locations?
What if I have band in one and a lesson in another? Or what if I have two kids and one has class in one location and the other has class in the other location? How will students get back and forth between the studios?
Battalion Studios will be our home base. Drop off and pick up will be at Battalion, and we will have staff on hand to walk students between the studios as necessary.
- Why do we have to move?
A portion of the construction is structural and the building must be vacant during that phase. We will return after the DOB inspects and approves the structural integrity of the building. Construction will continue after we return to 295 Douglass, but the structural phase of the project will be complete.
- Will there still be gigs?
Yes! All private lesson gigs and the Midyear Band Showcase will take place as scheduled at a nearby venue. Stay tuned for details.
MiniKeys MiniGigs will take during their regular class times in their regular studios.
- Will there be a holiday camp on MLK Day?
No. We will be focusing our efforts on making sure private lessons and band classes are running smoothly.
- What about February camp?
We will be meeting with the contractors regularly and will decide in December or early January whether to hold the February camp.
- But what about Friday Night Lights?
The Friday Night Lights show scheduled for Jan 13—Snarky Puppy!—will take place at Halyards on 3rd Ave and 6th St.
- Will there be room to hang out?
Yes, there is a small waiting room at Battalion where students, families and caregivers can wait.
Even better? Whole Foods (groceries! parking!) is around the corner, and Four and Twenty Black Birds (coffee! pie!) is down the block.
We are very excited about this move, but understand you might have questions/concerns about how this temporary relocation will work.
Please know that we are committed to continuing the awesome private lessons and band classes you expect from BMF, and we are working VERY hard to ensure a smooth transition during this time.
We are happy to answer any questions you have and thank you for your commitment to the BMFcommunity.
The new & improved 295 Douglass will be well worth it!
