One of the beautiful things to come out of the Brooklyn Music Factory the past few years is the adult band program. What started as a small group of parents wanting to play music, has turned into a thriving part of BMF with six bands going strong and growing.
The mission of the adult band program is simple: Through fun, game-based learning, students learn the skills to make music with others. This is a mission that we hold throughout the Brooklyn Music Factory whether you are six or 60.
What I didn’t expect to come out of the adult program, and what was a pleasant surprise, was the opportunity for parents of BMF students to get a window into their children’s worlds and to experience learning music though their eyes.
At the last adult show, a brave mom announced that she was terrified to join a band, and then realized that she wasn’t willing to do what she had been asking her child to do all along. This realization gave her the inspiration she needed to join a band, and she never looked back. It’s a really cool thing when you look at it that way… Presenting our selves with the same challenges our children are working to conquer as well.
So if you are thinking about trying your hand at singing, playing guitar or otherwise, I encourage you to think about what your kids might do. They may just lead you down a path you would never have found on your own.
Check out the next adult band show on June 22 at Beast of Bourbon in Clinton Hill!
